The National Gas Company of Trinidad and Tobago Limited (NGC) has published its 2020 Annual Report, themed ‘Embracing Opportunity, Creating Value’.
In a nod to the disruption of the year 2020, the format of this publication departs from NGC’s traditional Annual Reports, with a disaggregated narrative structure that offers a closer look at strategic business areas and achievements.
Despite posting a loss for the year 2020 due to accounting provisions for exceptional items, The NGC Group had several positive takeaways from 2020. Through an AMCHAM-awarded business continuity effort, The Group not only delivered on all service obligations despite pandemic restrictions, but managed to return a measure of stability to the local industry, expand its portfolio of investments and partnerships and intensify its focus on clean energy and sustainability.
In 2020:
NGC concluded upstream negotiations for supply from BHP Billiton’s Ruby field and Touchstone Exploration’s Ortoire development, while simultaneously advancing discussions for downstream contract renewals
NGC used learnings from COVID-impacted operations to help shape a Centre for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS) monograph that is being used worldwide to guide risk management during times of disruption
The Group’s internationalisation effort continued with PPGPL’s acquisition of NGL assets in North America; NGC’s execution of a design-build contract in Western Ghana and the continued sale of commodity cargoes to customers around the world
The Group accelerated deployment of technology across functions and operations to enhance collaborative remote work; process safety; infrastructure surveillance; emissions monitoring; data visualisation; procurement; and human resource management, inter alia
The Group strengthened its green agenda with an amplified operational focus on methane management; advocacy through industry events; research partnerships with academia; a ground-breaking carbon sequestration study and several investments in clean energy projects
The Group sought wider impact beyond energy through exploration of synergies with other state entities and sectors such as agriculture and water distribution; a partnership with the Ministry of Sport and Community Development to build resilient and sustainable communities; distribution of devices to schools to support online learning; and the launch of the ttEngage platform to streamline and expedite foreign investment in Trinidad and Tobago, to name a few.
The NGC Group remains ever focused on the sustainability of its business, the wider industry, the environment and all stakeholders in its space of impact. A keen eye on strategy and leveraging the intelligence of its people will see The NGC Group to a brighter future in coming years.
Chairman Conrad Enill noted:
“2020 demanded change, and we responded accordingly. No business, sector or country was immune to the ripple impacts of COVID-19, but those that survived the fallout were those flexible enough and willing to change. The NGC Group has emerged from the turbulence of 2020 with fresh perspectives and insights, new directions for our business, and a renewed sense of duty to our country. We are now forging forward as an integrated global business with a pivotal role to play in the future of Caribbean energy.”
