The Energy Chamber of Trinidad & Tobago has identified three sub-sectors where there are good opportunities to increase local content, namely marine services, engineering services and inspection services.  These were identified using data generated through the Local Content Management System and a series of consultations with operators, service companies and contractors.  In November 2024 we held three focussed discussions on these areas at the Local Content Forum and captured the ideas and suggestions from members on how we should be capturing more value in country from these sub-sectors.

Our overall strategy on local content is outlined in the Local Content Charter.

The Energy Chamber is in the process of synthesising all of the ideas and suggestions to develop a clear work plan around increasing local content in these sectors, to help inform the Energy Chamber’s strategic planning process.   As part of our regular three-year strategic planning process, in the coming months we will be undertaking a strategic review and updating the Chamber’s strategy to make sure we are focused on meeting members needs and contributing to a resilient energy industry.

In the interim, there are activities taking place at the Energy Conference that advance some of the areas that have already been identified for action:

Inspection services: there is a panel at the conference focussing in asset integrity and process safety.  Inspection services play a crucial role in this activity area and one of the areas for discussion in the panel will be how do we foster local resident support and services (including investments in people, equipment and technology).  The panel will also consider the services that will be needed to service a future offshore wind industry.

Engineering services: at the Local Content Forum one of the most important discussion points was about ensuring that we created the right local expertise, with the right competencies and certifications.   This is going to be a major area for discussion during the panel on investing in people and capabilities.

Marine services: one of the major opportunity areas that has been identified to increase local content in the marine services sector is in better coordination between operators, major global contractors and local marine sector companies (including logistics, shore bases and vessel providers).  There is a workshop at the Conference sponsored by DOF Offshore and specifically looking at this area, with a focus on sub-sea services.

We look forward to continuing the dialogue with member companies on local content in these subsectors and overall.
