Minister Young has commended the U.S. International Trade Commission on revoking hefty anti-dumping and anti-subsidy duties on urea ammonium nitrate fertilizers from Trinidad and Tobago.
Minister Young welcomed the determination of the U.S. International Trade Commission which would prove beneficial to the farming industry abroad and consumers who are being affected by substantial price increases due to the Russian Ukraine dispute.
The commission said that all five commissioners voted to reject the tariffs on the non-injury finding.
Minister Young noted that the Honourable Prime Minister, Dr Keith Rowley, and himself, had raised the issues surrounding fertilizers being produced in Trinidad and Tobago with decision makers in Washington D.C. at many different levels and in many different quarters during the past few months and this decision of the U.S. International Trade Commission in favour of Trinidad and Tobago is a welcomed one.
In a statement from Proman, the company said “We welcome today’s decision by the US International Trade Commission (ITC) regarding Urea Ammonium Nitrate (UAN) imported from Trinidad and Tobago into the United States.”
The company added “Fertilizer products like UAN play a vital role in supporting agricultural production and meeting global food supply needs. We believe that today’s judgment reflected testimony from across the U.S. agricultural sector that application of these duties would have resulted in significant supply constrictions in an already concentrated domestic market, particularly during the planting season when imports are essential to meeting fertilizer requirements.
As the sole UAN producer and exporter in Trinidad and Tobago, this decision will enable us to resume UAN exports to the United States, providing much-needed relief to supply constraints in that market.”
