The theme of the T&T Energy Conference 2022 is ‘Leveraging the Industries Strengths for the Energy Transition”. We have carried this theme into our annual awards programme and have extended it further to also leverage Trinidad & Tobago’s extensive talents in the visual arts.
In past years we have given standard physical awards to honour the winners in our awards programme; the sort of award that you might get at any international industry awards event. This year, as we emerged anew from the pandemic, we wanted to do something different and new. So, the Energy Chamber commissioned a renowned and celebrated local artist, Shalini Seereeram, to design and produce the actual awards to be presented to the winners. Shalini has for many years created vibrant reliefs and paintings with bold lines and a distinctive style. She has often used found or recycled materials and incorporated traditional Trinidadian techniques such as wire bending in her works.
To respond to the theme of the conference we gave Shalini a brief that was based on the concept of Sankofa.
Sankofa is a word from the Twi language from Ghana which means to protect or cherish, but also incorporates an idea of doing this even as you move forward. The concept is usually represented by a bird protecting a precious egg balanced on its back, but with its feet facing forward. We asked Shalini to incorporate this idea into the design of the awards.
The Energy Chamber is delighted to be supporting our local artists and to be leveraging the talents from both within and outside the energy industry. We are looking forward to seeing the final products, which will be given to the winners of our annual awards in four categories at the T&T Energy Conference on 31st May 2022.
Entries for the Awards programme close on Friday 20th May 2022 in the following categories:
