Every organization is vulnerable to crises. The days of playing ostrich – burying your head in the sand and hoping the problem goes away – are gone. You can try but your stakeholders will not be understanding or forgiving and therefore poor handling of a crisis affects your brand image, reputation and profits. Members of the organization, particularly reception staff, must know what to say, how to respond and the key persons in the organization’s incident command chain that is responsible for providing the right information to media, community representative and other stakeholders.

The guiding principle will be to communicate facts as quickly as possible, updating information regularly as circumstances change, to ensure the safety of the community residents and the continued operation of essential services.
