Trenching and excavation work is performed thousands of times daily, throughout the United States in all types of conditions. Unfortunately, each year in this country there are about 70 fatalities, in addition to over 1,000 work-related injuries associated with trenching and excavation incidents. Cave-ins can occur suddenly, without warning, giving little time to react. But their signs are present when proper safety precautions are not taken.

- Basic soil mechanics and the four soil types found in North America
- Tell-tale signs typical with excavation failures
- Four different types of protection systems used in excavations and trenches
