BHP makes discovery at Boom-1

According to the BHP Operational Review for Q3 2019, hydrocarbons were encountered while drilling the Boom-1 well. The well was spud on August 28th 2019 and the report indicates that evaluation and analysis are ongoing.

The report states that Boom-1 was one of two additional exploration wells drilled in the Northern licences as a part of Phase 4 of the deepwater drilling campaign. The other well that was drilled, Carnival-1 did not yield positive results.

The Carnival-1 well was spud on 30 September 2019. The well was eventually declared a dry hole.

This completed the exploration program on the Trinidad and Tobago Northern licences and BHP has indicated that Phase 4 of the deepwater drilling campaign in Trinidad and Tobago is complete. BHP has indicated that evaluation and development planning studies of the discoveries are ongoing.

Both wells were drilled at a water depth of more than 2000m. The Invictus drill ship was used for both wells and the vessel will return to the US Gulf of Mexico to continue work for BHP.
