Guyana’s government expects initial firing and testing of the first turbine at the Wales Gas-to-Energy Project in December. The turbine is expected to provide about 57 megawatts (MW) to the national grid.
Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation Deodat Indar outlined the timetable during a site visit, according to a September 8, 2026 report from the Department of Public Information (DPI). Preparations are under way for the turbine to receive natural gas.
Phase One is designed to generate 300 MW using four gas turbines and two steam turbines. About 1,300 workers are engaged at the Wales site in Region Three, where a substation is also being established.
Indar said additional generation was needed to meet rising electricity consumption. DPI cited residential, commercial and industrial development as drivers of higher demand. The government is also constructing approximately 425 kilometres of transmission lines.
Following firing and testing, work will continue to bring the first turbine online and connect the additional capacity to the grid.
