Malaysia’s Petronas has made another discovery offshore Suriname in Block 52, according to an announcement by Suriname President Her Excellency, Jennifer Geerlings-Simons during the opening ceremony of the Suriname Energy, Oil and Gas Summit (SEOGS) in Paramaribo.

Speaking in her keynote address, President Simons said Petronas had informed her earlier that morning of the new discovery in the block. Few details were shared about the find, including whether it is oil or gas.

Petronas is currently pursuing a natural gas development in Block 52 based on the Sloanea-1 discovery. In November 2025, Staatsolie approved the commercial declaration for the field, allowing the company to advance development plans.

The proposed project includes offshore gas wells, subsea infrastructure and a floating LNG facility. A final investment decision is expected in the second half of 2026, with first gas targeted for 2030.

Block 52 has already yielded several discoveries, including Sloanea, Roystonea and Fusaea. Petronas has continued exploration and appraisal activities in the acreage as it works toward development of its gas resources offshore Suriname.

During SEOGS 2026, the Energy Chamber of Trinidad and Tobago signed a memorandum of understanding with the Suriname Energy Chamber aimed at strengthening collaboration between the two organisations. The agreement covers knowledge sharing, local content development, investment promotion, policy engagement and joint industry initiatives.

More details on the latest discovery, including its size and whether it is oil or gas, are expected once Petronas and Staatsolie release further information.
