Fire watch personnel are required by OSHA outlined in 29CFR 1910 subpart Q – Welding, Cutting and Brazing (Hot Work Standard). Fire Watch literally watch for fire in areas of hot work. These areas of hot work include those where workers are welding, cutting using open flames and breaking concrete.
The main job for fire watch personnel is to sound the alarm if there is an emergency so that firefighters can be brought in if the fire spreads. They may attempt to control the fire by using the hand portable extinguisher, but their primary role is not to fight the flames, but to simply alert professionals so that they can come in and take care of it.
