As Chairman of Qualitech, Deo N. Lall’s personal journey mirrors the growth and evolution of the company he built over the past 30 years, a story defined by curiosity, determination, and the vision to create something lasting.
Growing up in London from age 8 to 22 exposed him to a world experiencing constant change. He recalls, “During my time in London, there were civil rights protests, anti-war movements, campaigns for gender equality, and fights against racial discrimination. I actually witnessed some great changes in the world. This exposure has always allowed me to have an open mind about people and new issues.”
These formative experiences, combined with his middle-class upbringing, instilled in him a sense of resilience, and curiosity, a combination that would later define both his personal and professional path.
With a BSc (Hons) in Nuclear Physics from the University of London, Deo’s academic path may seem unconventional for someone who would go on to run an engineering company. Yet, it was this very curiosity, this drive to understand how things work, that laid the foundation for his career. “Although I did Nuclear Physics at university, I always wanted to know how things worked and why they worked, I always had a thirst for knowledge… even up to now!” he says.
His first steps into the world of engineering came through a chance opportunity in Trinidad, one he seized without hesitation. “I came to Trinidad for 1 week before Carnival, had a fantastic time, and I was offered a job, so I quit my job in London and the rest is history,” he recalls. As this was his first real exposure to engineering he absorbed as much as he could on the job. It’s no surprise as “back then, there was no internet so learning came from hands on experience, magazines and textbooks.”
This hands-on approach, combined with his academic training, gave him a unique edge. It also set the stage for his deep and long-standing relationship with Trinidad’s energy sector. “From Guyana (0-8) to London (8-22) to Trinidad, from nuclear physics to engineering innovation, my journey has been one of lifelong learning and unyielding dedication,” he says.
Deo’s involvement in the energy sector stretches back more than 45 years, even before the industry had fully developed in Trinidad. He recalls that his first visit to Point Lisas was “to repair a Caterpillar bulldozer cutting the first road through the existing cane fields, now Atlantic Avenue. Over the years I have seen most of the plants being built and was even involved in the manufacture of the foundation bolts for some of them!” These early experiences gave him a front-row seat to the country’s industrial transformation. From the construction of major energy plants to ongoing maintenance and repair work, Deo became intimately familiar with the sector’s challenges and opportunities.
Yet, the early years were far from easy. “Sometimes I would not be able to see my children awake during the week… Many invitations to weddings, dinners, parties and other functions were often cancelled at short notice until we could afford additional staff to cover,” he shares. Even in these challenging circumstances, his commitment to excellence and service never wavered.
Founded 30 years ago, Qualitech began as a small engineering venture with big ambitions. Today, the company has grown far beyond its original scope. Multiple divisions, international clients, and partnerships with world-class brands define the company’s portfolio. What was once solely a machine shop, is now an equipment asset maintenance enterprise spanning Mechanical, Electrical, Machining, Engineered Solutions and Projects.
“We are fortunate enough to have expanded to where we are today due to the dedication, hard work and commitment of our 150+ members of our team,” Deo says. For Deo, the company’s growth is about more than numbers and profits. “Seeing people, who have been working for Qualitech, grow with the company and achieve a good standard of living… being able to help those less fortunate in society and give back to the community and various charities—that’s the most rewarding aspect of my job,” he explains.
Under his leadership, Qualitech has introduced cutting-edge technologies to Trinidad, expanded its service capabilities, and cultivated a reputation for quality and reliability that has attracted both local and international clients. Deo’s journey offers valuable lessons for the next generation of engineers, entrepreneurs, and professionals in any field. “Don’t squander any opportunities… Regardless of the profession you choose, what truly matters is how effectively you apply yourself, scale the work, and build strong teams around the business… give it your all and have the dedication and determination to get to the top!”
Central to his philosophy are principles he learned from his parents: honesty, respect, hard work, and compassion. Even after decades in a demanding industry, Deo continues to approach each day with curiosity. “It is most exciting to be part of this industry… there is always something new to learn every day,” he reflects.
Today, Qualitech stands as a testament to Deo’s vision and perseverance. From its humble beginnings, the company has expanded, diversified, and become a pillar of engineering services in Trinidad and beyond. It has introduced innovations that have set new benchmarks in the local market while promoting an environment where employees can grow and thrive.
As Trinidad and Tobago’s energy sector continues to evolve, Deo’s story demonstrates that curiosity, courage, and commitment can transform not just a career, but an entire industry. His journey is a blueprint for anyone aiming to make a lasting impact, a reminder that success is built on hard work, vision, and a steadfast dedication to people and progress.
