“The energy sector is at the heart of Trinidad and Tobago’s economy and development. To contribute to that through my role, knowing that the work we do matters on a national scale is both humbling and motivating. It’s something I take great pride in every day.”

I believe that with the right attitude and support, anyone can rise beyond their circumstances. My career is living proof that opportunity, when met with determination, can lead to incredible outcomes.”

Michael Dass’ career started in the agri-processing sector, working with the state-owned sugar company Caroni (1975) Limited.   When Caroni was closed down, Michael was forced to pivot and despite having no prior experience in the energy sector, he managed to secure a job with Process Management Limited (PML) as a Valve Mechanic.

It was a completely new environment and a big step outside his comfort zone.  Within two years, he was promoted to E&I Technician, and three years later, to Supervisor in the Electrical and Instrumentation Department. That journey, from starting in an unfamiliar field to becoming part of the leadership team has been life-changing for Michael. “I have a deep respect for the vital role this industry plays in Trinidad and Tobago’s development. I am passionate about excellence, teamwork, and empowering others, which is why I’m also involved in the mentorship program at NESC, where I contribute to training, developing, and guiding the trainees at PML.”  Supporting the next generation of skilled professionals is something he considers both a duty and a privilege.

His biggest challenge was stepping into an unfamiliar industry with little background knowledge. It literally meant learning everything from scratch—from technical systems to safety protocols in the oil and gas/petrochemical environment. However, it was those very challenges that quickly became his greatest opportunity “It pushed me to grow, to ask questions, and to continually improve myself. Each promotion along the way was earned through persistence and learning, and those experiences shaped me into the leader I am today.”

Another challenging new experience was the offshore environment.  Being away from family and adapting to a high-pressure, unfamiliar environment forced Michael to develop his ability to stay focused and composed and strengthened his ability to be adaptable.  He can now appreciate ‘the long hours and demanding conditions’ which required intense concentration and a strong work ethic. “Meeting company targets in those settings stretched me beyond what I thought I was capable of. Looking back, those challenges made me more well-rounded, resilient, and prepared me to lead others through the same”.

Twenty-one years after joining PML, Michael looks back and attributes his success to ‘a combination of personal determination and the support of the people around me. One of the turning points in my journey was being given the opportunity for numerous training and development programmes that allowed me to grow technically and professionally. I was also fortunate to have leaders at PML who saw my potential early on and encouraged me to take on greater responsibilities. Their belief in me gave me the confidence to aim higher.’  Family support also buffered him during the challenging periods, “They have been my foundation, offering constant encouragement and support through every stage of my career.”

Michael strongly endorses building strong relationships—whether with colleagues, clients, or industry contacts, “being approachable and open has helped me create lasting professional connections that have contributed to both my personal growth and the company’s success.

From being catapulted by circumstances, from sugar to energy, Michael shared a few learnings: “Use your current position as a foundation and always remain eager to learn. Be willing to take on roles that challenge you, even if they don’t match your qualifications right away. Keep showing up, stay disciplined, and be open to feedback. Most importantly, respect the industry and the people in it, it’s a field where hard work and integrity go a long way.”

From valve mechanic to a member of the leadership team at PML, Michael underscored the value of being a good listener “There’s always something to learn from those with experience. Maintain respect for your colleagues, clients, and the work you do.”
