In 2024, there were four major producers of natural gas in Trinidad & Tobago, namely bpTT, Shell, EOG Resources and Woodside. Together these companies produce about 95% of the country’s natural gas. Almost all of this comes from offshore fields predominantly off the east of Trinidad and north coasts of Trinidad and Tobago.
In 2024, bpTT retained its long-held position as the largest producer of natural gas in T&T and accounted for 46% of natural gas produced. bpTT is majority owned by the British major international energy company, bp, but with a significant minority shareholding from the Spanish international energy company, Repsol. bpTT produced natural gas at an average rate of 1,174 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscf/d) over the year, or approximately 208 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day (boe/d).
Fellow UK listed company, Shell was the second largest producer (23%) at a rate of 586 mmscf/d followed by US headquartered EOG Resources and the Australian company, Woodside which accounted for 14% and 12% of national production respectively. It should be noted that there are non-operator equity partners on some of the producing blocks, including the National Gas Company and Heritage Petroleum, but the Ministry of Energy data reports production by the operating company, rather than shareholders in blocks.
Trinidad & Tobago based DeNovo is the only producer of natural gas from the west coast, accounting for 1% of national production. DeNovo is part of the Proman group, the biggest petrochemical producer in Point Lisas.
State company, Heritage Petroleum is the country’s biggest crude oil producer, but only directly produces approximately 1% of the country’s natural gas, with 14mmscf/d produced offshore and 2 mmscf/d produced onshore.
The other company that produces natural gas onshore is Touchstone Exploration, jointly listed in Canada and the UK but operating solely in Trinidad. Touchstone produced about 33 mmscf/d last year but is in the process of purchasing another onshore gas producing field (Central Block) from Shell.
The last but certainly not least gas producer is the Perenco, the Anglo-French mature field specialist company. Perenco were primarily an oil producer in Trinidad, but in 2024 they saw their gas production grow as they took over ownership and management of some mature bpTT fields. They ended the year with an average of 2% of total gas production. This is set to significantly increase in 2025, as they take over ownership and management of the Woodside Angostura facility, as well as seek to increase production from the fields they have purchased previously. By the end of 2025, Perenco are likely to join EOG, Shell and bpTT as the major T&T gas producers.
