You would not usually expect an energy conference to feature both the author of a historical novel and a painter, but we like to be a bit different at the Trinidad & Tobago Energy Conference. We are sure that Amanda Smyth (the novelist) and Krishna Persad (the painter) are going to offer something exciting and stimulating at this year’s edition of the Conference.
There is an unfortunate perception that there is little innovation that takes place in the Caribbean energy sector and that any new technology or new process improvements are simply imported from elsewhere. The Energy Chamber of Trinidad & Tobago’s inaugural Innovation and Technology Challenge suggests that this perception is misplaced.
Prime Minister, the Honourable Dr Keith Rowley has announced that a preferred bidder has been selected for the sale or lease of the state-owned Point-a-Pierre refinery in Trinidad & Tobago. The refinery was moth-balled in 2018, amidst a radical restructuring of Petrotrin, the integrated national oil company. The upstream portion of Petrotrin was spun off into Heritage Petroleum (one of the sponsors of the upcoming Trinidad and Tobago Energy Conference, 31st May – 2nd June 2022 while the refinery was put up for sale or lease.

HDF has announced that it has acquired a 70% majority stake in the NewGen project in Trinidad, led by the local company Kenesjay Green Ltd ("KGL"). KGL, the project developer, will retain the remaining 30% of the share capital of NewGen, which will be jointly owned by KGL and an investment vehicle that will allow for the inclusion of additional local investors. HDF Energy is thus leveraging its technological expertise in hydrogen, its know-how in the development of green energy plants and its local presence in the Caribbean.
Hess Corporation has announced that it has made a final investment decision to proceed with development of Yellowtail offshore Guyana after receiving government and regulatory approvals. Yellowtail, the fourth oil development and the largest on the Stabroek Block, is expected to produce approximately 250,000 gross barrels of oil per day starting in 2025.
Shell Trinidad and Tobago, announced that production has started on Block 22 and NCMA-4 in the North Coast Marine Area (NCMA) in Trinidad and Tobago.
The National Gas Company of Trinidad and Tobago Limited (NGC) has signed a Gas Sales Contract (GSC) with local cement manufacturer, Trinidad Cement Limited (TCL). This agreement will govern the sale of natural gas to TCL and represents an important step forward for both companies after an extended period of negotiations. TCL has been one of NGC’s longest-standing customers for over 40 years. The conclusion of this GSC signals NGC’s commitment to the local manufacturing sector and bodes well for infrastructural development in Trinidad and Tobago and the region.

On 7th March 2022, Energy Chamber CEO, Dax Driver, presented to governmental officials from across the Americas on what the private-sector would like to see included in the upcoming Summit of the Americas, scheduled for June 2022 in Los Angeles, USA. Speaking on behalf of the Americas Business Dialogue working group on energy, Driver outlined the major policy areas that the group has recommended hemispheric leaders consider in their deliberations.
