My first full week back at work after the Christmas break is always an exhilarating one, because it is always just a few weeks ahead of our biggest and more important event for the year, the annual Trinidad & Tobago Energy Conference.   We always plan our conference for the beginning of the year, close but not too close to Carnival.  This year we have a little more breathing room than usual because Carnival is late, so our 2025 dates are the 10-12th February 2025, rather than the usual final week of January.  But the week has still been intense.

The Caribbean Development Bank (CDB, the Bank) has approved a USD 34.8 million loan to the Geothermal Power Company of Dominica (GPC) to fund the construction of a 10-megawatt (MW) geothermal power plant. The project is designed to strengthen Dominica’s energy security, reduce electricity production costs, and significantly lower carbon emissions in the power sector.

Employees of a number of our member companies were on the rig at the time of the incident and impacted by the event; others are involved in rescue operations. The immediate priority is to ensure that everyone is physically safe.

Perenco T&T Limited has announced the completion of the acquisition of the Cashima, Amherstia, Flamboyant & Immortelle offshore gas fields and associated production facilities, as well as the undeveloped resources from the Parang field (CAFI asset), from bp Trinidad and Tobago (bpTT). The acquisition, combined with Perenco’s operation of the TSP fields, aligns Perenco as a major gas producer in Trinidad and Tobago.

The National Gas Company of Trinidad and Tobago Limited (NGC) has shipped its first two cargoes of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) from Atlantic’s Trains 2 and 3 since the commercial restructure of Atlantic in December 2023. The shipments left Atlantic’s facility in Point Fortin on November 26th and December 6th 2024, bound for Italy and Egypt respectively.

NESC Technical Institute has announced the graduation of 112 students who completed the 2024 Perenco-Sponsored Training Programmes at the Mayaro Campus.

The Energy Chamber of T&T hosted its annual Downstream Forum earlier today.  This important annual forum provided close to 150 of our energy service and contractor members with details of on-going and planned maintenance projects, upgrades and turn-around activities within the downstream sector.   This is vital business intelligence information that allows our service company and contractor members to plan their activities and ensure that they maximise the value of business within the local economy.  The attendees were provided with detailed information on the planned activities of eight of the major downstream companies over the short – medium term.

T&T begins onshore wind resource assessment

The Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries has announced the successful deployment of Light Detection and Ranging devices (LiDARs) to the areas of Orange Valley and Galeota, Trinidad and Tobago. These devices will measure wind data to international standards for a period of 12-18 months, under the renewable energy initiative for the onshore ‘Wind Resource Assessment Programme (WRAP)’ for Trinidad and Tobago and it marks the first steps towards official wind energy deployment in Trinidad and Tobago.

A wide cross section of the Energy Chamber membership, spanning from small locally owned contractors through to major oil and gas operator companies, joined together on 20th November for the Energy Chamber’s annual Local Content Forum. Over one hundred and fifty participants were involved in extensive open and transparent dialogue to discuss major issues impacting the energy services sector and to identify areas for action by the Energy Chamber and other stakeholders in the coming year.
