Dr. The Honourable Roodal Moonilal, Minister of Energy and Energy Industries and the Honourable Ernesto Kesar, Minister in the Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries along with other senior representatives from the Ministry, met separately with executives from major downstream companies, Proman and Caribbean Gas Chemical Limited (CGCL).
In 2024, there were four major producers of natural gas in Trinidad & Tobago, namely bpTT, Shell, EOG Resources and Woodside. Together these companies produce about 95% of the country’s natural gas. Almost all of this comes from offshore fields predominantly off the east of Trinidad and north coasts of Trinidad and Tobago.
Subsea7 has announced that the company was awarded a sizeable contract by Shell for the Aphrodite gas project offshore Trinidad and Tobago.
“Does wind power have a future in the Caribbean?” This was the question posed in the final panel of the Caribbean Sustainable Energy Conference in Port of Spain last week, against a backdrop of scepticism from many commentators about the potential of wind power both in the Caribbean and globally.
Statement by Dr Roodal Moonilal
Minister of Energy and Energy Industries

According to International Energy Agency (IEA) data, the world invested more than US$ 2 trillion in clean energy last year, almost twice as much as it did in fossil fuels. This pushed total energy investment above US$ 3 trillion.
Shell Trinidad and Tobago Ltd. (Shell), a subsidiary of Shell plc, has taken a Final Investment Decision (FID) on the Aphrodite project, an undeveloped gas field in the East Coast Marine Area (ECMA) in Trinidad and Tobago.
Since we met here one year ago, there have been major shifts in the global landscape for sustainable energy. We have seen some major economies cancelling or restructuring previous policies, to encourage investments into lower carbon energy sources; the United States being the most obvious case, but they are not alone: as many other countries have also either scaled back subsidies or pushed back regulatory deadlines that were driving the energy transition.
More than a decade ago, the Energy Chamber established a Green Energy Day as part of the T&T Energy Conference. Since then, interest in renewable energy and decarbonisation has grown substantially. So much so, that in 2017 we created a separate two day event called the Clean Energy Conference. The conference continued to grow and the name changed to the Caribbean Sustainable Energy Conference to ensure that we covered the Caribbean and discussed the way that the energy sector can become an active player in establishing a sustainable energy future; one which meets the demands of the future while simultaneously lowering the carbon footprint.
Dr. the Honourable Roodal Moonilal, Minister of Energy and Energy Industries and the Honourable Ernesto Kesar, Minister in the Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries along with other representatives of the Ministry of Energy and Energy Ministries met individually with representatives from major upstream oil and gas producers bp Trinidad and Tobago, Perenco and Woodside Energy.
People often think that CO2 is the only greenhouse gas (GHG) which contributes to global warming and climate change. However, there are other important GHGs such as methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) which are also tracked under global climate agreements and which countries report under their international obligations under the Paris climate agreement.
bp Trinidad and Tobago (bpTT) has announced that the Mento development has safely delivered first gas through connection of the initial discovery well and the drilling campaign for the remaining seven gross wells on the platform will now begin.
Heritage Petroleum has announced that it has successfully spud Well FR1831.
According to a press release from the company, this marks the 5th well in the company’s 2025 land drilling campaign
The global energy sector is extremely interconnected and decisions in one country can have surprising impacts elsewhere. At first sight, changes in local environmental permits in New England, USA, would seem to have no significance to Trinidad & Tobago, but there may be unexpected impacts.
Trinidad and Tobago ranks among largest CO2 emitters per capita in the world. This is principally attributed to the concentration of heavy industries operating within the nation and its comparatively small population size. Nevertheless, the country's absolute contribution to global carbon dioxide emissions remains below 0.1%, much smaller than the major emitters such as the China (32%), USA (12%) and India (7%).
Touchstone Exploration has announced that it successfully closed the previously announced acquisition of 100 percent of the share capital of Shell Trinidad Central Block Limited (STCBL)
D2F Technical Services recently announced that it has achieved over 5 years of incident free E&I MSA services. According to the company, it excited 6 TARs without an incident with over 50 employees at peak load.
The United States has begun to roll back several energy subsidies and incentives approved under the previous administration's Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). Notably, there has been slashes to renewable energy and green hydrogen incentives while tax credits related to carbon capture and sequestration appear to have been preserved. Eliminating the credits for renewable energy projects and green hydrogen projects in the US can potentially signal more attractive investments for these types of projects in other jurisdictions.
Dr. the Honourable Roodal Moonilal, Minister of Energy and Energy Industries and the Honourable Ernesto Kesar, Minister in the Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries along with executives from the Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries met with Dr. Jenifer Neidhart de Ortiz, Chargé d’Affaires and other senior officials from the U.S. Embassy in Trinidad and Tobago.
